Pressure Mapping – An Introduction Guide
Pressure mapping is the process of determining the distribution of pressure between two surfaces. Most commonly used in our industry to measure an individual’s body against a wheelchair cushion/seat or medical mattress. We also use pressure mapping to measure pressure for a person who spends prolonged time in alternate seating.
Pressure mapping technology uses flexible, sensor-embedded mats to provide a visualisation of pressure distribution. Colour coded data reveals areas of low to high pressure. This enables us to provide optimal support solutions to help prevent pressure injuries, improve comfort and an individual’s overall well-being.
How Pressure Mapping Works
Sensor Mat/Pad – A flexible mat that contains grids of pressure sensors is placed between the two contacting surfaces of the individual’s body and chair, cushion or mattress.
Collection of Data – As you apply pressure between surfaces, sensors on the mat detect force and tension and relay the information to a visual interface.
Visualisation of Data – Transmitting the data to software, the system generates a colour coded map displaying the pressure of the individual against the surface. A colour guide displays the pressure areas. Blue to green showing low pressure and orange to red showing high pressure areas.
Analysis of Data – The displayed colour coded pressure map allows us to easily and correctly identify high pressure and at-risk areas.
Pressure Mapping Applications
Pressure Injury Prevention – Identifying at-risk high-pressure areas in individuals allows for the correct clinical scripting of equipment solutions to help minimise the risk of pressure injuries.
Optimised Seating Solutions – Visualisation of the pressure distribution allows for real-time selection and modification of seating, cushions and footrests. Pressure mapping visualizations clearly indicate how changes and seating adjustments affect pressure distribution.
Improved Comfort & Support – Data and insights from pressure mapping allow a more informed selection of optimal supportive surfaces and positioning, improving the comfort, support and overall well-being of the individual.
Finding the Right Solution
Every individual is different, and requires a tailored approach to finding the right solution for their specific needs. Pressure mapping forms a vital step in that process, providing a high level of information that can be utilised to find the right solution – because getting it right matters.
